The Orizaba Phantoms Story.(english)

When a country competes in a world cup the very first thing they have to look for is a place to stay, this place has to have all that is necessary for them to train and prepare for the biggest tournament in the world.

In Mexico’s first world cup, Brasil was looking for a place with a lot of height so that their players would have an advantage when they returned to normal height, that’s why the assistant coach proposed Orizaba, since it has one of the highest mountains in the country (Pico de Orizaba). When they arrived there they found out that actually the city has less height than most of the places the world cup was going to be played at, and that the only thing that had great hight was El Pico de Orizaba.

After this initial mistake they started to look for local teams they could play friendly matches with, and that is how they found the legendary team called Los Fantasmas de Orizaba or Orizaba Ghosts.

They were called ghosts because they did not admit any player that was not an albino, or that was what people thought, because all of their players were the best albino players from all over the world, every albino in the world wanted to play for them, and that is what made things much more difficult for the natives of Orizaba to join the team.

The Ghosts became famous after beating in a friendly match the brazilan team that went to win the world cup in México 1970, because this meant they were better than the world champ.

This fame lasted all the way to the second world cup played in Mexico (1986), so when the argentinian team qualified, the first thing they looked for were The Ghosts of Orizaba. Even though it was another generation, the Ghosts played in complete harmony and beat the argentinians (led by Maradona) 3 -2.

The team was offered a place in mexico’s best league and they even got an offer from Real Madrid to play versus them in a friendly match, but the ghosts denied to play in any other field that was not theirs.

After a while the team ceased to exist when the owner of the field sold it to a developer for them to build a shopping mall, so there are no more ghosts in Orizaba.
